Default apps at the start of 2026
Published on January 10th, 2026
It's been over 2 years since I last shared my "default apps", so here's an updated list at the start of 2026:
- 📨 Mail:
Mail.app. - 📮 Mail Server: iCloud with custom domain through iCloud+.
- 📝 Notes: Obsidian with no real "system" (yet).
- ✅ To-Do: Things 3.
- 📱 iPhone Camera app: the default camera.
- 📸 Photo Shooting: Sony A7iv and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
- 🎨 Photo Management & Editing: Capture One and
Photos.app. - 📆 Calendar:
Calendar.appsynced via iCloud. - 📁 Cloud File Storage: iCloud Drive.
- 📖 RSS: Readwise Reader. Or use my referral link for 2 free months.
- 🙍🏻♂️ Contacts:
Contacts.appsynced via iCloud. - 🙋♂️ Browser: Vivaldi.
- 💬 Chat: WhatsApp, Discord, Slack.
- 🔖 Bookmarks: I have no good solution for this at the moment. Suggestions?
- 📑 Read It Later: Readwise Reader.
- 📜 Word Processing: Google Docs.
- 📈 Spreadsheets: Google Sheets on the odd occasion I'll need it.
- 📊 Presentations: n/a.
- 🛒 Shopping List: Local grocery store's mobile app.
- 🍴 Meal Planning: Mela, but looking for something I can more easily share with my partner.
- 💰 Budgeting and Personal Finance: YNAB. Or use my referral link for a free month.
- 📰 News: RSS, BlueSky feed.
- 🎵 Music: Apple Music, vinyl records, and Jellyfin for lossless files stored on my NAS.
- 🎙️ Podcasts: Pocket Casts, grandfathered into the lifetime plan.
- 🔐 Password Management: 1Password.
- 🧭 Navigation: Apple Maps on mobile, Google Maps on desktop.
And other bits that don't fit neatly into the above categories:
- Raycast as a launcher, snippet repository, and clipboard manager.
- Rectangle for window management, but I'm realizing now this can probably be folded into Raycast.
- Mos to make scrolling on macOS not annoying.
- Endel to help me stay focussed during long stretches of work.
- Hevy for logging my gym accomplishments.
- Apple's
Health.appandFitness.appin combination with my Apple Watch to keep me healthy and somewhat sane.
Not a whole lot has changed since last time. Most notable are probably the switch from Lightroom to Capture One, and the move off of Safari to Vivaldi. Both are probably worth at least a blog post in the near future about their respective setups...
