Volume control not working on Apple TV remote

Published on April 9th, 2026

The volume control on my Apple TV remote recently stopped working. The buttons simply would not adjust the volume like it used to, so I had to use the TV's own remote Luckily, the fix is simple. As described in this comment on Reddit, you hold down the "Control Center" and "volume down" buttons for about 5 seconds and wait for the status light on the Apple TV to turn back on again. This reboots the remote, which fixed the issue for me.

There's some more hidden and undocumented key combinations on the Apple TV remote:

  • App Switcher: Double-click the "Control Center" button to show a list of open apps. Swipe left/right to swipe between then, swipe up to close the selected one.
  • Home/Back: Press and hold the "back" button to go to the home screen, no matter where you are.
  • Accessibility: Triple-click the "back" button to get access to configured accessibility shortcuts. You can configure these via Control Center → Accessibility.

Hope this helps someone, and especially me when this inevitably happens again and I need to remember how to reset the dang remote!
